Herbert "Andy" Summers
Andy Summers the much beloved Minister to Students and Professor of Peace and Justice Studies died March 13, 2008. Andy was a beloved figure in the Warren Wilson College community and deeply involved in causes for social justice. A dedicated runner, Andy managed to smile and chat while running marathons. He was a jovial and welcoming spirit who took a great interest in all people.
"Andy Summers was a "card carrying" Renaissance Wild-Man. He was an avid outdoor enthusiast who loved hiking, biking, backpacking and of course running. His hobby of playing his three saxophones in jazz bands both at Wilson and in the community was another of his life long passions. He would practice his horn and his Spanish every day he could. He loved sports, social gatherings, life of the mind and working with students. His official title was "Minister to Students" and also taught Peace Studies courses. He was an ordained Methodist Clergy and had a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. He came to Warren Wilson College in the late fall of 91 and immediately immersed himself into the college community.
In the winter of 1993 he took his first students to Guatemala with the organization Witness for Peace. After that, every other year he would take students for term long courses trips to Central America. These trips became one of his great passions and encouraged his study of Spanish in addition to the political history of Latin America. In another life he could have been a Union Organizer for he always took the working people's struggles to heart trying not only to educate him and help but also to encourage students. The coal mining history in the Appalachian region and the effects on poor communities caused him to include students on trips to the mining towns in West Virginia. The Open Door in Atlanta was another trip for students to experience what they were doing with the homeless there.
Whenever there was a home soccer, basketball or swim meet, you would see Andy out there hooting and hollering for the OWLS.
Participation in Andy Fest is a wonderful way to honor his memory and to carry on the spirit of his work. It is a celebration of life and would bring a smile to his face."
