2009 Florida Service Trip
Both men's and the women's swimming teams from Warren Wilson College cruised to victories on Saturday, Jan 17th against a small squad of LaGrange College athletes, winning 15 of 16 events contested. The meet took place on the final leg of a 10-day training and service trip the Owls took to St. Augustine, Florida after the long academic break.
Not only did the Owls win almost all the events, but most swam season best times and personal bests after an extremely challenging week of training in all kinds of weather, in pool and air temperatures that varied greatly, traveling 1500+ miles in a van and logging 25-30+ miles of swimming!
In addition to the intensive training the swimmers endured, they also
participated in some valuable service work at the Sanctuary on 8th
Street in Jacksonville, Florida. Recent graduate Kristen Booth is one
of a handful of dedicated workers who provide resources, shelter,
education, direction, meals, safety, love and inspiration to a
wonderful group of children 18 and younger in a challenging
environment.
The swimming team participated in extensive
cleaning, weeding, clipping, cutting, dismantling, repairing,
organizing, playing, tutoring and engaging in all kinds of fun and
games over a two day period. The enthusiasm from the children at the
Sanctuary was matched by the Warren Wilson students for the duration of
the service, and will be a fond memory for all.
The Owls are back in action this Saturday at Milligan College for a tri-meet with Campbellsville College at 1pm.
