02.21.2011 - [Women's Swimming]
Fast swimming and national qualifying times was the theme this weekend
for the 2011 Appalachian Conference Swimming Championships held at Ohio
University in Athens, Ohio on Friday and Saturday. The Owls women's team
finished 11th place and the men were 12th out of 15 teams competing.
94% of the swimmers had lifetime best performances, and highlighting the meet was six student-athletes qualifying for the 2011 NAIA Swimming and Diving Championships to be held in St. Peters, Missouri March 2-5.
Freshman Audrey Hollingsworth (Raphine, Va.) qualified in both the 50-yard and 100-yard Freestyle, the latter in varsity record time (56.47). Junior co-captains Amelia Hubbard (Tobaccoville, NC) and Johnathon Bland (Raleigh, NC) each qualified with an "A" cut in the 400-yard Individual Medley (varsity record of 5:11.43) and the 200-yard Breaststroke (2:18.89), respectively.
Also qualifying for the national championships in four relays (200-yard Medley and Freestyle, 400-yard Medley and Freestyle) for Warren Wilson are freshmen Alessia Faverio (Smithtown, NY), Breanna Roberts (Savannah, Ga.) and Laetitia Mead (Chestnut Hill, Mass.).
Hollingsworth's performances come less than six months removed from major back surgery after falling from a tree on the first day of freshman orientation in Swannanoa.
